Projects from DKIT Creative Multimedia
On Wednesday the 18th of November third and fourth year Creative Media students took part in a workshop with Artist Nelly Ben Hayoun . The workshop was entitled ” LIFE AS A COCKROACH”, A KAFKAIEN WORKSHOP
Cockroaches are believed to be among the hardiest insects on the planet. Some species are capable of remaining active for a month without food and are able to survive on limited resources like the glue from the back of postage stamps. Some can go without air for 45 minutes to survive poisonous CO2 level, which will allow them to survive to climate change!
They also secrete lot of wax that contains proteins useful for the other members of the community.
NASA is even looking at them to build the next spacecraft for the future Mars Exploration.
In this workshop we will explore disaster scenarios, genetic evolution under extreme constrain, space travel, and home‐scale.
How thinking as a cockroach will actually help us to be able to get use to weightlessness and rethink our homes before we leave for Mars and have to deal daily with Zero G.
Get ready for an upside down design workshop!
Thanks to Ian Downes from CM4 who shot the video below and a very special thanks to Nelly for making the whole thing possible.
Our 4th Year Creative Multimedia students recently brought their Burn Station project on a tour of Dundalk as part of their User Theories module.
Burn Station is a listening and distribution system for copyright free music. It allows the public to browse a library of legally distributable, Creative Commons licensed music and to burn their own custom compilation.
This project was a journey into the philosophy and benefits of open source and free media distribution, all the hard work put in culminating with two days of events at The Marshes and DKIT. The Creative Multimedia students brought free music and the open source ethos to the public, who were eager to engage and learn more.
Burn Station events have been held worldwide from Bogóta to Shanghai, and this is the first time the initiative has been brought to Ireland. The DKIT Burn Station crew have been fully endorsed by Platoniq, who set up the first copyleft copystation in Barcelona five years ago.
Here are a couple of videos documenting the project:

The Department of Music and Creative Media are delighted to announce the details of the second Free Art Wednesday which will take place on the 4th of November 2009.
After the success of the first Free Art Day earlier this year we are asking everyone to get involved again and make this one even more successful.
A growing global phenomenon usually known as Free Art Friday. The concept of Free Art Friday is a simple one.
Artists create a painting, sketch, sculpture or whatever and leave it on the street. The piece can then be picked up by anyone and claimed as their own.
All that’s asked is that you email the artist and let them know where you found their piece.
We will be holding our own version on Wednesday the 4th of November so we are calling on all painters, photographers, illustrators, sculptors, graffiti artists, cartoonists to donate a piece of their art.
We will do the hard work of placing the art all over campus so all you have to do is leave your work over to the drop off point in Carrolls by Monday the 2nd of November. Please ensure that you put your name and contact details on the back of your art.
We know there are plenty of Artistic people in the Institute so we are asking everyone to get to get on board Staff as well as Students.
In order to facilitate people getting involved we will be holding workshops on Wednesday the 28th of October in Carrolls where there will be Art supplies available to help you create your piece of Art.

Some of our posters for the excellent Creative Media DKIT show ‘FIS09′, as Elaine Parsons from the Digital Hub says “they certainly raise the bar when it comes to the standard of work being produced.”
Pictures from the show will follow…

Here are some images of our busy second years at DKIT Creative Multimedia, as they work on their tangible interfaces for the group project module.
