Fís 2011, Celebrating 10 Years

You are cordially invited to the launch of the Fís 11 at 6.30pm on Wednesday 1st of June 2011 in the PJ Carroll Building on Dundalk Institute of Technology Main Campus. This exhibition will showcase final year work from students of the

BA (Hons) in Communications in Creative Media

BA (Hons) in Video and Film Production
BA in Video and Film Production

The exhibition will also be open on Thursday 2nd June from 12 midday to 9pm and on Friday 3rd June from 2pm to 7pm.

Right now we’re busy preparing everything to make this celebration of the 10th year of Creative Media programmes at Dundalk Institute of Technology a legendary experience. We hope to see you there! Fís 2010 – Creative Media Degree Show

Students unveil creative media, film and games projects at
FÍS 2010 in the Carroll’s Building, Dundalk.

Wednesday June 2^nd 6 – 9 pm. Thursday 3^rd June 12 noon – 8 p.m.

Creative Media at the Dundalk Institute of Technology returns with its end of year showcase, Fís 2010, in the stunning surroundings of the newly renovated Carroll’s Building.

Featuring completely new and original work ranging from film to interactive installations and games, Fís 2010 examines a wide range of ideas reflecting on the nature of art and technology.

The work on show will highlight the relevant and diverse skills that students of creative media, film and games development acquire over the course of their studies at DKIT. The students showcasing work are graduating from five programmes: the BA and BA (Hons) in Communications (Creative Multimedia), the BA and BA (Hons) in Video and Film Production and the Bsc Hons) in Computing in Games Development.

This is an historic occasion for the Dundalk campus as the launch of Fís 2010 will be the first time that the newly refurbished Carroll’s Building will be open to the public. The original P. J. Carroll’s Building was built between 1967 and 1970. It is a fine example of an Irish take on Modernist architecture by Ronnie Tallon of the legendary firm Scott Tallon Walker. Their architecture team has successfully faced the challenge of transforming a 20^th-century factory space into a 21^st-century environment for education in cutting-edge creative media and technology.

Housing the School of Informatics and Creative Arts, the building is arguably the finest facility of its kind in Ireland, including a state-of-the-art TV studio, audio and radio recording studios, photographic darkroom, performance spaces and screening room.

Fís 2010 marks the beginning of a celebration of a decade of Creative Media at the Dundalk Institute of Technology. Further events will be scheduled in the Autumn.

Fís is open to all, and will be launched at 6 p.m. in the Carroll’s Building on Wednesday 2^nd June.

It will close at 9 p.m. on 2^nd June and re-open from 12 noon – 8 p.m. on Thursday 3^rd June.

Make and Do with Y4

Recently the fourth years had their annual Make and Do day, where the brief was to find a ‘recipe’ on the web, get all the ingredients (garages at home and maplins came to the rescue) and show us how it’s done in the workshop.

This one was made using a free kid’s meal toy glued onto a truck and spray painted gold – apologies the sound is not as loud as it should be:

It was a lot of fun, we had pillows with built-in speakers, LEDs many ways, and of course this made an appearance:

Some beautiful writing from First Year

For Writing for Multimedia, the first brief was a descriptive 600 words on any scene of the student’s choice, using as many of the senses as possible to bring the words to life. The standard was high, and we have some promising writers among us!
Sarah Harrison is one such excellent example, so do take the time to read this:

Standing as still as a statue I stared out over the vast ocean. The water appeared muggy and uninviting to my naked human eye.

In the horizon: grey and dull in the wretched weather the thin, frail clouds crept into my view slowly as if they had just escaped from hell and were longing for liberation. The wind, struggling to clear the sky of these demon clouds sent a wave of depression my way. I focused my eye on the crashing waves and I saw to my amazement miniscule droplets of water rising and falling above the rest of the shoal like a group of cheerleaders motivating the football team to win.

High above my insignificant body I recognized a flock of wise seagulls taking it in turns to swoop down in a flash of grey and white on to the water in front of me; possibly fearful of this foreign creature. I closed my eyes gradually and allowed myself to take a deep, nourishing breath. My nostrils flared, inviting the oxygen in. The fresh, cool air hugged my tongue momentarily and seeped down my relieved throat into my all too willing lungs. The salty moistness absorbed in every cell of my being and provided a satisfying flavor to my ravenous stomach.

A faint hint of smoke reached me; no doubt the harmful fumes from car exhausts from the nearby road. Deep chesty rumbles echoed from my left side, an ancient vehicle begging to be put down but not being granted its wish. Smoother, less agitated purrs filled my ears soothingly as a younger model glided by. An impatient driver honking aggressively stung my ears and I let out a sigh of irritation. The harsh noise cursed through my nerves and rattled my delicate brain. Shaking my head to clear the pollution I opened my eyes. Glaring now at the sky I saw once again the sorry looking clouds claw their way in desperation over my head. The sun was pathetic in the morose sky.

A pale ball of mist quite beautiful with thin flecks of silver spread randomly over its surface gave the impression of a crystal ball about to tell me the future.
Sand as old as time rested obediently under my feet. Every minute crumb bowed to me and sneaked into every crease between my toes. Millions of years of erosion had lead it to servitude. Wiggling my toes delightedly my skin was exfoliated gently and sent pleasure to my every pore.

Gazing down serenely at the brown and gold colours, special patterns and designs appeared to me. Swirls of glittering particles whipped around me lovingly and showered me in a light coating of fairy dust, making me feel like a little kid again.

My hair flew protectively around me like a pair of strong arms as if creating a barrier between me and the rest of the world.
